By Chad Wall

When it comes to golfing, those who have played for decades might be looking for new challenges at new courses. So what state has the best golf courses? We have compiled a list of the country’s top golf courses, including courses in California, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Nebraska.

New Jersey – Pine Valley

Pine Valley is known to excel at the quality of its hazards and greens. Some say it has the most sophisticated greens and formidable hazards of any course. Many have considered it the #1 golf course in the United States for decades.

California – Cypress Point

This stunning piece of land was made available for golf enthusiasts in 1928 by architect Alister MacKenzie. It has an iconic par-3 16th hole that extends into the Pacific Ocean, making it one of the most dramatic holes in the game.

New York – Shinnecock Hills

When wondering what state has the best golf courses, New York has several. Shinnecock Hills has been a venue for 5 of the U.S. Opens since 1986, the most recent one being in 2018. It is considered to be one of the earliest golf courses in America.

Pennsylvania – Oakmont

Some say Oakmont looks just as vicious as it plays. With this course, what you see is what you get, and that is the beauty of it. There are very few trees or water, but the natural contours and slopes of the land create challenges for even the most seasoned golfer.

Georgia – Augusta National

Created from the vision of Bobby Jones and architect Alister MacKenzie, Augusta National is meant to reflect the strategic options and capture the spirit of the Old Course at St. Andrews, a favorite of the two. The course was built in 1933 and recently has trees planted and the corridors narrowed, but it still remains a Masters tradition.

Nebraska – Sand Hills

Sand Hills is one of the most natural golf courses in the United States. When it was originally designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, they barely needed to move any dirt to create this beautiful course with rippled fairways, sandy terrain, and wavy prairie grasses.

California – Pebble Beach

Pebble Beach is the first oceanside course open to the public. The course’s design brings players right up against the ocean’s edge, into the depths of the woods, and then back again. Those who have played this course can vouch for the spectacular views throughout.

Pennsylvania – Merion

Merion is well known for its remarkable variety throughout the course. With long and short par-4s and par-3s, golfers will find an array of challenges here. Merion has a newly installed irrigation system that helps control the speed and firmness of the playing surfaces so you know the greens will be in excellent condition.

New York – National Golf Links of America

Commonly known as “National”, NGLA is considered a truly great course. Architect, C.B. Macdonald modeled several holes in the United Kingdom and created a very strategic design that is sure to challenge and delight.

New York – Fishers Island

Fishers Island is accessible by either ferry or air, making it an exclusive retreat off the coast where many of the Old Money crowd loves to play. The course tracks along the island’s northeast edge with lovely terrain and incredible views of Long Island Sound.
